Austrian researchers develop new sensors to accurately measure electric field strength

The researchers used different methods to redesign the passive MEMS components and to use electrostatic induction to affect the small silicon grid structure, which is only a few microns in size, attached to a small spring. When the silicon block is exposed to an electric field, applying a force on the silicon crystal, the spring will be slightly compressed or extended.
Mass production
This mechanical displacement can then be optically tracked by observing changes in the LED beam that pass through the structure. Another grid is fixed above the silicon block, so when the silicon moves under the influence of the electric field, a new light flux will be generated. This change can be used to measure the strength of the electric field that caused the displacement.
In a published paper, the research team noticed that the new equipment could also be used in relatively low frequency areas. Kainz said: "The device has been able to accurately measure a weak electric field of less than 200 volts per meter. This means that our system can already run at roughly the same level as existing products, but our products are smaller and It's easier to use.”
Meteorology is another target area for the device. Before lightning strikes or during thunderstorms, sensors will help resolve some of the unresolved issues in lightning studies of local electric fields, because lightning may cause mobile devices to issue lightning strikes. In addition, similar devices can also be used to display the distance of high-voltage transmission lines.
MEMS technology should allow the use of relatively low-cost silicon micromachining technology and mass production methods for mass production. This technology can also be used in applications such as cross-environmental monitoring and personal security. Kainz thinks: "The other measurement methods are mature enough, and our method is just beginning. I firmly believe that our MEMS sensor will realize more applications in the future."
