Carbon dioxide to methanol technology is expected to be commercialized

Mitsui Chemicals Corp. of Japan said recently that it plans to build a new large-scale plant that uses carbon dioxide as raw material to produce methanol.
Mitsui Chemicals' goal is to commercialize this technology within three years. The company has now completed the research and development of patented technology catalysts. The next step is to design and manufacture large-scale devices.
Mitsui Chemicals operates a 100-ton/year demonstration unit using the technology at its Osaka plant in western Japan. This is the only device in the world that uses methanol as a raw material to produce methanol. The company's president said that it has received numerous inquiries about the technology, because of the current global concerns about increasing global warming. The biggest challenge currently facing this technology is the stable supply of hydrogen, because the bulk of the carbon dioxide production is usually far away from where large amounts of hydrogen are produced.
