China's caustic soda industry began in the late 1920s. China's first multi-plate ion-exchange membrane electrolyzer was designed and put into production by Shanghai Tianyuan Chemical Plant in 1979. China has basically completed the supply of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda production equipment, and successfully completed the domestic ion membrane. The production of advanced ion-membrane technology is increasing year by year. By June 2005, the total capacity of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda in China has exceeded 6.16 million tons, accounting for 44.4% of the total output. It is expected that by the end of 2005, the capacity of domestic ion-exchange membrane caustic soda equipment will reach 8.042 million tons per year, which will account for 50.9% of the total domestic caustic soda production capacity. The application of technologies such as metal anode electrolyzer expansion anodes, modified separators, and small polar distances has enabled China's diaphragm manufacturing process to reach a new level. Overall, China's caustic soda production technology has reached and approached the world's advanced level.
Although the rapid development of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda in China, there is still a certain gap between the developed countries and the advanced level in the world, and there is a problem of “using advanced and lagging research and development”. The 10,000-ton caustic soda apparatus consumes approximately 100 square meters of ion-exchange membrane per year, and the annual production capacity of ion-exchange membrane is 8.04 million tons. The annual consumption of ion-exchange membrane is approximately 80,000 square meters, equivalent to approximately RMB 560 million, not only increasing. The production cost of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda is controlled by humans. The second is the short service life of ion exchange membranes. In China, the number of devices that can be operated continuously for more than three months using ion-membrane electrolysis technology devices is very small, and the number of unplanned parking devices for each device is as few as several times during the year, and as many as ten times. Most of the advanced level enterprises in developed countries only plan to park outside the country only 2 or 3 times a year. With the same electrolytic cell and ion membrane, the membrane life of our device is generally only about 3 years, while the membrane life of foreign countries can reach 5 years or even longer. The urgent task of our country's caustic soda industry's independent innovation is to overcome the ionic membrane.
In view of this, the relevant national departments and enterprises have been working hard to increase the research of ion membranes and develop advanced domestic ion membranes as one of the key tasks of independent innovation. It is gratifying that some progress has been made in this area. According to "Science and Technology Daily" report, in order to overcome the difficulties of perfluorinated ion exchange membranes, Shandong Dongyue Group and Shanghai Jiaotong University have established a technical cooperation relationship, and the Ministry of Science and Technology has allocated 20 million yuan for scientific research funding, which has greatly increased the speed of research and development. At present, perfluorinated ion exchange membranes will formally enter industrial production. On May 19, 2005, the second phase of Dongyue International Fluorosilicone Industrial Park, a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan, was started. The project mainly includes 500 tons of perfluorinated ion exchange resin and ion membrane projects that are listed as major scientific and technological projects under the National 863 Plan. The completion of the project has made China the third country in the world that has the capability of producing perfluorinated membranes after the United States and Japan.
