Canadian House of Commons Passes Biofuel Act

The biofuel bill submitted by the Canadian government was passed by the House of Commons a few days ago. The act stipulates that by 2010, all gasoline sold in Canada must be blended with 5% ethanol. By 2012, diesel must be blended with 2% of renewable fuels.

The bill won the support of the ruling Conservatives and the Liberal Party, but was opposed by two small parties on the grounds that they feared that food production would turn into fuel. It is reported that this bill must be approved by the Senate before it can be implemented. However, the Liberal Party holds the majority of seats in the Senate. They believe that only a small part of the food crop will be used to produce biofuels. It is understood that the implementation of this bill will meet Canada's demand for about 2 billion liters of ethanol and biodiesel.

According to the data, there are currently 16 ethanol plants in Canada that are either in production or under construction. The total annual production capacity is about 1.6 billion liters, and the main raw materials are wheat and corn. At present, there are three biodiesel plants that mainly use animal fats as raw materials. The total annual production is about 97 million liters. Another plant will use rapeseed oil to produce biofuels.
