High-strength high-modulus carbon fiber, also known as graphite fiber, compared with the traditional high-strength carbon fiber, the carbon content of up to 99% or more, and have a higher modulus. In addition, it also has the advantages of low coefficient of thermal expansion, high conductivity, good thermal stability and dimensional stability, and is applied as a key material in fields such as spacecraft and aerospace. For a long time, the core preparation technology of high strength and high modulus carbon fiber has been monopolized by a few foreign companies. For example, Toray has the M40J, M50J, M55J, M60J, etc. besides its high strength medium modulus carbon fiber products such as T800 and T1000 High-strength high-grade carbon fiber products. In view of the importance of high-strength and high-modulus carbon fibers in the field of national defense, their preparation technology has been blocked at home and its products are also banned in the country.

Founded in 2008, Ningbo Materials Special Fiber Division started with high-performance carbon fiber as its research target. Relying on the national engineering laboratory of carbon fiber preparation technology of National Development and Reform Commission and carbon fiber detection and characterization platform of NDRC, it has successively broken through the high-strength medium carbon fiber pilot And engineering technology. At the end of 2014, the division started to develop high-strength and high-modulus carbon fibers. M50J grade high-strength and high-modulus carbon fibers were successfully prepared in May 2015. After testing in aerospace, aerospace and nuclear energy units, the tensile strength and tensile modulus were up to 5.12GPa, 475GPa, the performance reached or surpassed similar foreign products, followed by a continuous and stable production. At the end of 2015, the division carried out the research and development of M55J high-strength and high-modulus carbon fiber at a higher level and successfully achieved its preparation technology breakthrough at the end of January 2016. At present, Ningbo Materials Institute already has continuous and stable production capacity of M40J, M46J and M50J grade products, and has formed M55J high strength and high modulus carbon fiber preparation technology.

Though the domestic M55J grade high strength and high modulus carbon fiber meets or even surpasses the similar foreign products in the main performance, senior engineer Zhang Yonggang believes that it is still necessary to solve the problems such as the stable production of M55J grade domestic carbon fiber and the matching of fiber and matrix in the processing of composite material. To this end, in the future work, Dr. Wang Xuefei, Dr. Qian Xin will focus on high-strength high-modulus carbon fiber structure and performance of the stabilization, fiber surface structure design and performance of composite materials and other fields to carry out research work.

It is reported that special fiber division will be in the realization of M55J-class high-strength high-carbon stabilized carbon fiber production at the same time, follow-up will carry out M60J-class high-strength high-carbon fiber research and development work.
